About Proxmox

Proxmox is a Virtual Machine environment / Tier-1 Hypervisor. The phrase "Tier-1 Hypervisor" means that it is a virtual machine environment that runs directly on bare metal hardware and interacts directly with it. If it were a Tier-2 Hypervisor, it would be running on top of an Operating System as a program, like in the same way Google Chrome is a program.

Utilization of Proxmox

In my homelab setup, I have two instances of Proxmox running. An installation is running on my Dell OptiPlex and my MINISFORUM Mini-PC. The installation on the MINISFORUM PC is running a virtual machine dedicated to a game server and a virtual machine dedicated to Docker containers. Both virtual machines on the MINISFORUM PC are running the latest version of Ubuntu Server. A backup schedule is set for the game server to backup every 48 hours to my NAS server.

On my Dell OptiPlex, the Proxmox installation is used for a Windows Server 2019 domain controller and testing client devices. As I currently work as a system administrator for an internship, it is good for me to have a "sandbox" where I can attempt to expand my skillset. I use the domain controller to test PowerShell scripts and Group Policy. There are a few Windows 10 test VMs that are joined to the Windows Server 2019 domain so I can test applied Group Policies and simulate an enterprise environment.
